September 7, 2005 - When you think of yoga do you only think of slow relaxing movements that stretch out your aching muscles and lull you into a state of calm? For many, yoga is just that – an antidote to life’s stressors. The combination of stretching and meditation in a basic yoga class has proven to help ease anything from insomnia to chronic pain.
But, did you ever think that yoga could be included in your aerobic fitness regimen? For a more physically demanding form of yoga, try “Power Yoga” at Absolute Yoga in Hopkinton. Power Yoga, which is based on the Ashtanga form of Yoga, is for those who want a serious workout. You will move through a series of asanas (poses) going quickly from one to the next to build strength, flexibility and stamina.
While you will work up a sweat in this class, you will also get the calming benefit of a “slow flow” class. According to Kristine Maselli, "In addition to the physical nature of the class there is also a mind body connection that will continue with you after class. The breath work is meditation and motion. For many people, simply sitting and meditating does not work. Their mind is racing or they simply need movement. Our classes end with relaxation which is the most important part. Many people are unable to relax until they have an outlet."
Power Yoga is a more advanced yoga practice and is not recommended for beginners.
Kristine Maselli, R.Y.T., has over 9 years of experience teaching yoga and fitness classes. In addition to teaching classes in the Hopkinton facility she volunteers her time teaching yoga to disadvantaged children, troubled teens and adults at local organizations such as Hopkinton’s Serenity House, Project Just Because, and Wellness Fairs. Absolute Yoga is located at 77 West Main Street, Hopkinton, MA 01748 on the 2nd floor. Call 508.625.1152 or visit www.absoluteyoga.net
