Cellist Rafael Popper-Keizer returns to King's Chapel for a concert with organist Heinrich Christensen. For this program in the 2011-2012 King's Chapel Concert Series, Popper-Keizer and Christensen will play intriguing and rarely-heard works for cello and organ by twentieth- and twenty-first century composers including Marcel Dupré, Daniel Pinkham, Niels la Cour, Robert Sirota, and Steve Laven. This concert also features the world premiere of Lisa Bielawa's "Winter Fantasia".
Famous French organ virtuoso Marcel Dupré wrote a great deal of chamber music, including the Sonata in a minor for cello and organ. Daniel Pinkham composed "Oration" in 2000, the year he retired after a 42-year tenure at King's Chapell. Lisa Bielawa's "Winter Fantasia" was commissioned by the Concert Series especially for this occasion. She has collaborated with Rafael Popper-Keizer many times as part of her residence with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
Rafael Popper-Keizer maintains a vibrant and diverse career as one of Boston's most sought-after artists. He is principal cellist of the Boston Modern Orchestra Prject and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra as well as a member of Emmanuel Music Chameleon Arts Ensemble, Monadnock Music and other distinguished ensembles. The Boston Globe praised his "melodic phrasing of melting tenderness" and "dazzling dispatch of every bravura challenge."
The concert takes place at historic King's Chapel, 58 Tremont Street in downtown Boston, on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 5 PM (doors open at 4:30 PM). Suggested donation is $15, $10 for students and seniors.
