The chorus and orchestra will be conducted by PFC Music Director, William B. Richter and accompanied by organist Elizabeth Chapman Reilly.
Launching their 11th season, the PFC will feature two modern choral works, James Whitbourn’s Son of God Mass and John Rutter’s Gloria. A selection of Christmas carols will also be included in the repertoire, marking the beginning of Advent and the holiday season.
Composer and choral conductor John Rutter was born in 1945 in England. Educated at Clare College, Cambridge in music, he later earned a 4-year position as Director of Music from 1975-79. During that tenure, Rutter was invited to conduct the premiere of his cantata Gloria in Omaha, Nebraska. Described as a “cornerstone of the modern choral repertory”, Gloria exalts the text of the prayer from the Ordinary of the Mass. In 1981 Rutter founded the Cambridge Singers, which have recorded many sacred choral works under his own direction. In his lifetime, he has composed and arranged more than 110 carols, choral works, anthems and an opera.
A choral scholar, composer James Whitbourn was born in England in 1963 and educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. An affiliation with the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) Philharmonic led to an opportunity for three large scale commissions. Whitbourn’s Son of God Mass, a devotional concert work composed in 2001 as the orchestral score to the award-winning BBC series Son of God, has been performed worldwide to profound acclaim. Written for mixed voices, organ, and soprano saxophone, the piece resonates an eerily beautiful balance of tones between the featured instruments and voices. Currently, Whitbourn’s compositions are performed annually in concerts devoted to his music at Westminster Choir College.
Tickets for the performances are priced at $15.00 in advance and $18.00 at the door. Advance tickets are available at The Golden Gull Studios at 17 South Park Avenue in Plymouth, 508-746-8091; Plymouth Center for the Arts, 11 North Street, Plymouth 508-746-7222; The Studio of Duxbury, 25 Depot Street, Duxbury, 781-934-2121; and from PFC members.
