This year’s Maine Jewish Film Festival hopes to engage and inspire our audiences by exploring the Jewish Experience of Labor through the lens of nine films.
These films highlight the often-unheralded role of Jews within the enduring contest for universal equality and self-determination. Some highlights include the story of Clara Lemlich who endured arrests and beatings as a result of her efforts to organize garment workers in Manhattan’s Lower East Side; the inhabitants of the “Coops” one of four cooperative apartments built in the Bronx in the 1920s by visionary Jewish garment workers; the anti-Nazi and rescue activities of the American Jewish labor movement, including their aid to the Underground fighters of the ghettoes of East Europe; and Gertrude Berg, star and producer, of the 1950’s sit-com The Goldberg’s who took a stand against McCarthyism.
We believe that this year’s Labor theme will be a catalyst for both Jewish and non-Jewish audiences to seek greater understanding of the Jewish Labor movement through the powerful medium of film. Guests, including film directors, producers, union organizers, and scholars will elaborate on this exploration through a series of forums and lectures throughout the nine days of the festival.
We will also offer numerous films covering varied subject matter that explore Jewish culture through a variety of genres, features and documentaries, drama and comedy – in rich storytelling, talented performances, and provocative thoughts – that provide a forum to enrich, educate, and entertain a diverse community about the Jewish experience. |
