DJ Kid Hops (Positive Vibrations)

KID HOPS has been mixing records and curating music for fifteen years, performing alongside Damian Marley, Horace Andy, Massive Attack, Goldie, Roni Size, DJ Hype, LTJ Bukem, London Elektricity and countless other reggae legends and cutting edge electronic music icons. His rough & rugged selection style is rooted in the booming Kingston soundsystem tradition, but Kid Hops’ expressive programming and seamless mixing keeps him in the present. His kinetic deejay sets and engaging radio shows have earned him worldwide recognition, and stirred Seattle’s weekly newspaper The Stranger to call him “reliable as a Swiss watch.” Representing cutting edge sounds from the streets of London and Kingston, to the clubs of Paris and Berlin, catch Kid Hops twice weekly on award-winning radio station KEXP 90.3fm Seattle (www.KEXP.org). His Saturday morning reggae radio program “Positive Vibrations” airs 9am-12noon PST, while his weekly exploration of electronic beats, “Expansions”, takes over the airwaves Sunday nights 9pm-12midnight PST.

DJ Chilly (El Sonido)

It’s an incredible honor and total blast to be a part of KEXP, sharing and discovering music with other people who are passionate about it.I grew up in the musical hotbed that is rural Montana. I’ve been DJing since Jr. High and kept in touch with the outside world during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s with a constant supply of music magazines and Matador and SST mail order catalogs. I moved to Seattle in the summer of 1995 to study audio production and find me a job in this here music business. After attempts at work in live sound and studio recording I discovered the station and became a volunteer in October of 2000 when it was still KCMU.

I became an employee in 2002 and have had my own radio shift since 2004. I started with music reviewing, audio production and then began assisting Greg Vandy on his show The Roadhouse. Greg showed me not only the technical side of DJing, but also how to put together a real show. I was officially trained by Cheryl Waters to be a variety DJ and it was Riz’s example that I always looked to most. All the KEXP DJs continually inspire me and I hope to do the same with our listeners. Aside from my KEXP show I work with our production department making event promos, station IDs, and editing KEXP’s killer live in-studio performances and podcasts.

Darek Mazzone (Wo' Pop)

Darek Mazzone has been a Producer/DJ for the last 20 years, starting in Boston, MA at a production company called Interlock Media Associates. Darek produced films about the struggles of indigenous tribes to protect their land and way of life from encroaching modernization and exploitation. Films such as “Rainforests Proving their Worth” and ” The First Link” gave Darek a deep understanding of the importance of cultural exchange.

In 1992 Darek moved his operations toSeattle, WA, where he began working in a wide range of media projects. He focused his attention for the next four years on the advertising industry and gained experience in the technical equipment and skills that the high budgets of ads could afford. While working in advertising, Darek produced and directed work for a wide range of international clients in all forms of media. In 2000 he produced ten films for Seattle’s Experience Music Project that were met with wide acclaim and continue to be a showpiece of the 300 million-dollar facility.

Darek also created music+film programming for the Paris based world music broadband channel Mondomix, where he found himself producing films in France and South Africa.

Darek eventually returned to music Producing and Hosting the highly regarded World Radio Music Program, “Wo Pop.” For the past 19 years, “Wo Pop” has been the driving force toward engaging audiences through modern global music and currently aires every Tuesday night on 90.3 KEXP and online at KEXP.org. In 2006, Darek started the non-profit event company, Juice. Raising over $90K in 3 years, Juice hosts quarterly events where diverse groups of people come together for the love of global music and simultaneously raise money for charities committed to international outreach and support.Darek continues to DJ around the world, playing at various clubs in the US and Europe, playing with such artists as Santana, Pearl Jam, REM, Ozomatli, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Paul Oakenfold, Roots, Dengue Fever, and numerous others.
