Details:The 2017 Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble presents a special holiday concert! The 30-member jazz band is comprised of students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds who attend Garfield, a public high school in the Seattle School District with such an interest in jazz that it maintains three levels of jazz band in its curriculum. The Jazz Ensemble is the top jazz band in this program.
The Ensemble has won every major competition on the west coast of the United States. In February 2017, it was named the “Outstanding Festival Band” at the prestigious Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival for an unprecedented eighth time. In 2011, it was named the ‘Outstanding Instrumental Ensemble’ at the Reno Jazz Festival for a record fourth time. It is also a four-time winner of the Essentially Ellington National Jazz Band Competition & Festival, held in New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. It is the only jazz band in the nation to accomplish this feat.

Jazz in the City at the Frye Art Museum is a free, bi-monthly performance series produced in partnership with Ariel Media, with a purpose to celebrate the art form of jazz music and its long-standing influence and vibrancy in the city of Seattle. The Frye's First Hill location is adjacent to Seattle’s historic Jackson Street Jazz District: a combination of The Central District and the current International District, which comprised the historic China Town, Japan Town and Filipino Town. The Jackson Street Jazz District nurtured such renowned artists as Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Ernestine Anderson, and Jimi Hendrix.
