Painter Richard La Roche will display 14 large-scale watercolors at the Wayside Inn Gallery from September 4th through November 1st, 2009. A graduate of the New England School of Art, La Roche is a long-standing member of a number of professional art organizations, including the prestigious New England Watercolor Society and the Rockport Art Association, having been awarded the Genevera Underwood Award for excellence in watercolor by the latter in May of 2009 for his “Late Afternoon Hush.” All artwork is available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the non-profit mission of Longfellow's Wayside Inn.
Referring to himself as a "painter of the New England mood," La Roche believes that an emotional affinity with his subjects is vital to making a good painting. Striving to depict how a painting should "feel" rather than how it should "look," with a glance it becomes clear to any viewer that mood is a priority in all of La Roche's work. Sun Flurry depicts a familiar but nonetheless stirring countryside vignette, where the scattered remains of an ancient stonewall intersect a large uprooted oak, the entire scene dusted by gentle flurries that blow through an already snow-covered landscape. With the power and accomplished flair of such master watercolorists as Andrew Wyeth and John Whorf, Richard La Roche depicts the world around him awash with feeling, and a deeply rooted sense of appreciation.
Paintings by Mr. La Roche are represented in a number of private and corporate collections, including Bank of Boston and State Street Bank. The gallery is located at 72 Wayside Inn Road, Sudbury and is open daily free-of-charge from 9am to 7pm. For more information about the exhibit phone (978) 443-1776 or visit www.wayside.org/events. |
