The famed Sudbury mill ground its first grist on Thanksgiving Day, 1929 as part of Henry Ford's grand village design for the Wayside Inn estate. Ford owned the property from 1923 to 1945 and eventually developed his 2,000-acre tract to include a Chapel, one-room schoolhouse and water-powered mill. What is generally recognized as the country's first "living history museum," the Wayside Inn Historic Site was a training ground for Henry Ford's School for Boys, whose educational focus was initially on the agricultural sciences. The Mill was an integral part of Ford's 'village industries' concept, providing a practical education in pre-industrial grain production as well as the history of early milling practices in rural New England.

The Wayside Inn Grist Mill was once used to produce flour for both the King Arthur and the Pepperidge Farm companies, and was used as a site location for the 1992 movie "House Sitter" starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. More recently, the Mill has been the recipient of several competitive grants for structural improvements, including a new roof and freshly painted steel water-wheel. Part of the Sudbury landscape for generations of Inn visitors, the Grist Mill has been prominently used in a number of corporate advertising campaigns as well as countless calendars and jigsaw puzzles published throughout the United States.
