Details: | Treasures from the Milberg Collection presents more than 100 prints, drawings, and watercolors from a remarkable private collection that spans two and a half centuries. Highlights include rare early 18th-century print portraits of Indigenous leaders who both allied with and resisted the European quest for colonial power in North America and an extraordinary survey of historic prints documenting events and leaders of the American Revolution and Early Republic. A medley of 19th-century town and city views charts the nation’s expansion across the continent, while great natural landmarks like Niagara Falls are celebrated as icons of national identity. Popular prints from the mid-19th century critique American politics and celebrate American pastimes: music, picturesque touring, and baseball. The rise of American watercolor as an independent artistic medium in the later 19th century inspired the exquisite works of the American Pre-Raphaelites. Finally, the collector’s deep interest in New York City is reflected in a selection of splendid prints, drawings, and watercolors by artists of the Ashcan School.
