Details: | JACOB’S LADDER., Jewish Bluegrass and more! Performing Live on Monday, February 6, 2023 at 7:30 pm Temple Ner Tamid, 368 Lowell St. Peabody, MA 01960
The 2023 Combined Jewish Women’s Organizations invite you to their annual program featuring JACOB’S LADDER, formerly known as Kol Kahol, A JEWISH BLUEGRASS BAND featuring the traditions of Judaism and American Bluegrass Music.
Formed in 2019, Jacob’s Ladder, now called Kol Kahol , will be performing LIVE! At Temple Ner Tamid on Monday, February 6, 2023 at 7:30pm. The group seeks to push the boundaries of contemporary Jewish music and traditional American Roots music within the context of Jewish communal singing and prayer. In combining these two musical identities, they tell their story through music; not only are they proud of their Eastern European Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewish traditions, but also of their American heritage and its influence on their lives and musical style. In doing so, they offer a unique spiritual experience to those who are wrestling with their own identity, particularly regarding what it means to be an American Jew. Jacob’s Ladder draws its inspirations from bluegrass icons such as Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe, and Bill Monroe, as well as original “Jewgrass” musicians from the 70’s and 80’s, including Andy Statman, David Grisman, and Stacy Phillips. Their music is also influenced by contemporary and versatile Jewish bands such as the Klezmatics, the Moshav Band, and Nefesh Mountain. Jacob’s Ladder is rooted in the traditional liturgy that one might find in an Orthodox, Conservative, Reform or Traditional Jewish setting. The group believes that Jewish liturgical music can expand beyond traditional melodies while maintaining its essence in a traditional prayer structure. The creative process of the band incorporates different approaches and techniques. Together, they strive to highlight each of their individual sources of inspiration into our group's ever-changing and evolving sound. At heart, they are all bluegrass musicians, and they center themselves–and thus their new music—in its natural groove and language.
