During the renaissance, Spain became the largest empire ever, stretching from southern Italy and Flanders all the way across the Atlantic to South America. No doubt inspired by the grand size of their nation, Spanish musicians composed great music that reflected the many regional styles now incorporated into the empire. Thus, among the songs, canzonas, fantasias and dances typical of 16th- and 17th-century Spain, we can also find music in variation style from Naples, Galicia and the African New World. Ms. Cheron and Très Maresienne will perform several very different settings of “Folias” (“the madness”), and one “Jacaras” (“dance of the ruffian”), as well as a beautiful, lyrical romance, and a lively tono humano by Sebastián Durón.
Praised for her "warm tone," and for having “the voice of an angel,” mezzo-soprano Carrie Cheron performs regularly as a soloist and ensemble member of Skylark Vocal Ensemble, Emmanuel Music, Boston Baroque, Lorelei Ensemble, and folk/baroque collective Floyd’s Row, among others. A champion of contemporary classical composition, Carrie is also a nationally recognized performing singer/songwriter. Violinist Lisa Brooke is concertmaster of Symphony by the Sea, and she currently plays with Coro Allegro, Arcadia, and New England Classical Singers. She is a founding member of Très and is frequently heard as a soloist and with many ensembles in Boston and New York. Carol Lewis and Olav Chris Henriksen are also frequent collaborators with ensembles in the U.S. and abroad, including Capriccio Stravagante, the Boston Camerata and Capella Clausura.
