Details: | Led by Boston Lyric Opera Tenor Christon Carney, classes will be engaging for youth and adults alike (13+). Through the combination of seminars and masterclasses over a span of eight weeks, with a focus on the music and history of the Harlem Renaissance, you'll come away with new ideas for how to appropriately express your and the composer's musical vision when working with music of different styles.
As we explore expression and style, Mr. Carney will draw upon his own passion for the music of this unique, influential period, and will lead participants in learning about six of the most influential song writers of the era. Toward the end of the series, Mr. Carney will move to the modern day, sharing music and themes of three contemporary black composers.
By exploring both the music and historical context of Harlem's Renaissance, students will broaden their understanding of musical style as an extension of cultural themes and traditions.
Classes will include discussion and performance alternating with masterclasses.
Those who take or have taken voice lessons are encouraged to perform in one of the bi-weekly masterclasses - but this is not a requirement. |
