The Lourie Center… More offers its winter 2023 schedule for the Lourie Lectures courses and is now accepting registrations. Lourie Lectures continuing education courses provide engaging discourse for adults over 50. Taught by academics and content experts, topics explore the arts and humanities, science, culture and more. Satisfy your thirst for learning through these fun and informative weekly talks.

February and March courses are offered in-person at the Lourie Center. Each course meets once per week for four weeks.

Art and Architecture in Italy from the Roman Empire to the Baroque

Join us for a visual feast of awe-inspiring Italian art and architecture! This course will explore the origins and development of painting, sculpture, and architecture in Italy from the 1st through the 16th centuries.
Instructor Laura Hughes teaches Art History at USC Sumter and Columbia and has been a co-leader with husband Tom Hughes of the Darla Moore School of Business Study Abroad program for 8 years, traveling to Turkey, Greece, and Cuba.

South Carolina's Signature Foods, Recipes, and Their Stories

Based on the 2022 book Taste the State: Signature Foods of South Carolina, Recipes, and their Stories”, by Kevin Mitchell and David S. Shields, this course explores the cultural histories of regional ingredients and showcases specialty dishes found throughout the regions of South Carolina.
Instructor David Shields is Carolina Distinguished Professor at the University of South Carolina. His recent book “Taste the State: Signature Foods of South Carolina, Recipes, and their Stories” is co-authored with chef Kevin Mitchell and features the richness of South Carolina’s culinary history, reconnecting South Carolinians with the recipes and ingredients of their past.

Thayra Rios Schad, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist, is currently a clinical instructor at the college of pharmacy and is a PGY-1 Community Resident at Medicine Mart Pharmacy in West Columbia.

There’s Always Something to Learn About Wine!

The goal of these sessions is to provide a solid base of information to help you on the shopping trip for your weekly supply of table wines or the evening glass you enjoy. We will explore the most common grapes used in wine and a few stars of the less common grapes. Other terms and phrases you encounter on a trip to the wine shop will also be explained. Each session will offer a tasting of several wines related to the course content.
Instructor Robert Croom is a Certified Specialist of Wine and Wine Consultant at Bottles Beverage Superstore in Columbia, SC, where he has worked for the past three years following retirement.
