Details: | NSU Art Museum is pleased to announce it has commissioned New York painter Peter Halley (b. 1953, New York, New York) to create a spectacular new immersive site-specific installation, entitled The Mirror Stage for its spacious second floor galleries. The Mirror Stage is comprised of two nearly identical spaces, each entered through a separate door at opposite ends of the gallery. The configuration of the installation’s multiple chambers is reminiscent of the rectangular interiors and chapels of Eastern Orthodox churches. Echoing the barrier walls that separate the altar from the rest of the church, Halley inserted a solid dividing wall that bars viewers from passing through the center of this installation from either side. In place of these churches’ floor to ceiling screens of icons that symbolize the mystical union of heaven and earth, some walls are laminated with digitally printed reflective vinyl, while others are covered with a grid of brightly hued textured panels. The four monumental fluorescent-colored geometric paintings that hover like tabernacles in each section contribute to the viewer’s vivid and uncanny experience of this installation as they navigate real, pictorial and virtual space.
