Fiber-Fashion-Feminism

April 30-June 11, 2022 / Mon-Sat, 10am-4pm

Artist Reception: May 20, 2022 / 5:30-8pm

For the past few months The Art Center Highland Park has been prioritizing ‘community’ in their North Shore gallery; including championing diversity and inclusion, finding new avenues for artistic discovery, and engendering expansive creative exploration. Some great connections have developed through networking and collaboration, broadening the community literally and metaphorically. The focus of their newest exhibit is to uncover, from the large network of creative artists, those that help develop the concept while also setting the stage for them to play a leadership role in a breakout artform: fiber.

Anyone who spends time reading about what’s new and exciting in the world of art might notice a little more than a hint, maybe just a whisper of an exciting new possibility: i.e. the world of fiber. Curator Caren Helene Rudman, Board President Yumi Ross, and Executive Director James M Lynch had the opportunity to consult with Anne Wilson, a Chicago-based artist on the Art Institute of Chicago Art Institute’s Fiber & Material Studies Department and a leader in the field.

“Anne echoed our belief that there is an amazing new body of work happening in fiber arts, more than people expect if they think solely of weaving, quilts, and textiles. There is an important and groundbreaking group of artists challenging perceptions, pushing the art form and frankly, its unbelievable!” says Rudman. “Anne remarked on the broad scope, which challenged us to seek out the best of the best, not to just open our call up for entries, but to hand select each artist in this exhibit. We narrowed it down to nine amazing women, including two well-established fashion designers, to develop our breakout concept: Fiber-Fashion-Feminism.”

“We really feel that this is consistent to our vision,” says Lynch. “Our commitment to community and our deep-dive into the cutting-edge innovation of fiber artists, has enabled us to continue bringing people together in a new and exciting way”. Inspired by the question, ‘how does this exhibit create community?’ Lynch responds, “Think of the word FABRIC and the literal weaving of threads to create something bigger, and then think of multiple aspects of a community, coming and ‘weaving’ together to create something bigger and stronger than any one of us individually.”

Add to this concept that the TAC annual Spring Benefit on April 29th coincides with the exhibit, the theme ‘Common Thread’ really coalesced.
