| Details: | By William Luce and featuring Mary Gutzi. Based on the life of poet Emily Dickinson from 1830 to 1886, and set in her Amherst, Massachusetts, home, the 1976 play makes use of her work, diaries, and letters to recollect her encounters with the significant people in her life – family, close friends, and acquaintances. It balances the agony of her seclusion with the brief bright moments when she was able to experience some joy. You may ask, “What is Readers Theatre”? Well, I believe that it makes music of the spoken word, As there are 8 notes in an octave (plus 5 in the cracks), the voice can create many sounds in-between all thirteen notes because the voice is the perfect instrument, not made by hand. Just close your eyes and create the sets and costumes in your imagination. For those of you who grew up around an old up-right battery radio, you will know how to sink back into your chair and fantasize. You may see the face of a long gone loved one, as you hear the story. You remember, down by the orchard with a swing and the small of sweetness. Imaginary friends are still available for those who dare. The greater your imagination and imagery, the greater you will enjoy Readers Theatre. |
