Details: | Celebrate summer, and the passion of collecting everyday objects, with this unique display from Iza van Riemsdijk’s collection of over 3,300 flyswatters. Iza made her first purchase in Japan in 1989: a bow tie-shaped pink swatter with tweezers in the handle to pick off the dead flies. Since that first purchase, she has added more to her collection from her travels around the world. Flyswatters of all sizes, including some that will fit in the palm of your hand and others over 3 feet long, make up her collection. The earliest flyswatters were, in fact, nothing more than some sort of striking surface attached to the end of a long stick. An early patent on a commercial flyswatter was issued in 1900 to Robert R. Montgomery, who called it a fly-killer. Montgomery sold his patent to John L. Bennett, a wealthy inventor and industrialist, who made further improvements on the design.
