Details:Harold Garde at 100: The Unseen Works in Two Acts features 100 never-before-exhibited works by the prolific Harold Garde (American, 1923-2022). This exhibition will unfold over the course of 2024, beginning with the unveiling of fifty works February 24, 2024. The second half of the exhibition will open June 1, 2024. This exhibition is nearly 80 years in the making, as Garde’s relationship with the University of Wyoming began in the 1940s. He studied visual arts using the GI bill after serving in the US Army Air Forces in World War II. Garde studied with a progressive group of faculty that represented different styles of modern art: Leon Kelly, Ilya Bolotowsky, and George McNeil. From these three, he learned abstraction, expressionism, and surrealism, all foundational elements for Garde’s work. Paintings and works on paper from Maine, New York, and Florida were selected for Harold Garde at 100 to exemplify his distinct vision and the iconographies he returned to across decades. These recurring visuals include chairs, kimonos, puppets, pinnacles, vessels, and many examples of the strappo method developed by Garde. This expansive exhibition invites visitors to experience Garde’s dynamic brushstrokes and singular perspective.
