Details: | Leslie Barlow’s MAEP exhibition “Within, Between, and Beyond” comprises paintings and video interviews that feature 16 subjects who identify as mixed race people or transracial adoptees. The project documents the historically marginalized narratives of mixed race, multiracial, or transracial adoptee identified individuals. By insightfully centering mixed race experiences, Barlow provides a platform for issues of race and identity. Barlow lives and works in Minneapolis. Primarily an oil painter, she shares stories through figural relationships that explore the politics of representation, identity, otherness, and racial constructs. Barlow is a recipient of the 2019 McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship, the 20/20 Springboard Fellowship, MN State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant in 2016 and 2018, and was named artist of the year by City Pages in 2016. In 2018, she received the Minnesota Museum of American Art Purchase Award in the Minnesota State Fair Juried Exhibition.
