Details: | The week-long workshop will be a combination of outdoor sketching and painting, studio time, and excursions to visit the area. Students will learn at least three ways to start a painting, new methods to improve compositions, and feel more confident altering what is seen to enhance your art – all in an amazing place where Vincent Van Gogh made some of his most powerful paintings!
The curriculum will follow this general plan:
Day 1: Simplify forms in your sketches and then use those sketches to make your painting. Handout: Words of advice. Direct start
Day 2: Compositional considerations still be thinking about simplification. Handout: Compositional Considerations #1. 4- value underpainting
Day 3: Look at simplifying color palettes: Potentially focusing on color palettes used by Van Gogh. Handout: Some successful limited color palettes
Day 4: Do your own thing Handout: Color Schemes
Day 5: Do your own thing or abstraction. Discussion: Is Van Gogh’s work abstract or not? Handout: Abstracting
Day 6: Visit market (I know this probably isn’t the day for that, but I want to include it. ? Day 7: Critique of work done by students in the past and what has been produced during the week.
We'll stay at Hotel Le Calendal, smack in the middle of Arles, on the hilltop, across from the Colosseum in one direction, and in the other across from the Roman Theater. ? |
