Details:Taught by Lynn Davidman, Ph.D., nationally renowned professor of Modern Jewish Studies and a National Jewish Book Award winner, this course aims to develop a critical understanding of the various meanings of “race,” the history of this concept in the United States, and to analyze how this idea is a social construction that varies across time and space. We will focus upon Jews in the United States in order to scrutinize how the Jewish immigrants – from Western Europe, first, and then from Eastern Europe – were perceived and treated by the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants who dominated and controlled this country from the 18th century onward. The racialization – the attribution of physical and personality characteristics – of the Jews (and members of other ethnic immigrant groups) affected their ability to integrate into the larger society and their overall life chances.

We will be applying critical race theory to the case study of Jews, to demonstrate how racial meanings are produced and reproduced by those in power, who use these categories to exclude entire groups of people from the social mainstream. The social construction of race permits these ascriptions to change; we will evaluate how particular population shifts in the larger society contributed to the “whitening” of the Jews beginning in the 1920’s. The narrative, of course, does not end there, and we can conclude with a discussion of contemporary issues and concerns.
