Details:The images within this exhibit were inspired by the people and places on the Islands of Fogo and Santiago in the Cabo Verde Islands. The Republic of Cabo Verde is an island country, off the west coast of Africa in the central Atlantic Ocean, consisting of ten volcanic islands. The Cabo Verdean archipelago was uninhabited until the 15th century when Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the islands. Because of their location, the Cabo Verde islands played an integral role in the Atlantic slave trade, due to this, Cabo verde was economically prosperous during the 16th and 17th centuries. Cabo Verde's economy declined precipitously during the 19th century due to the suppression of the Atlantic slave-trade, and many of its inhabitants emigrating during that period. However, Cabo Verde recovered economically by becoming an important commercial hub and useful stopover point along major shipping routes. On July 5th, 1975 the Republic of Cabo Verde's fight for independence, initially led by Amilcar Cabral before his assasination in 1973, was realized.

All the images contained within this exhibit were taken between June and July 2021.
