| Details: | David Roberts (Scottish, 1796-1864) was a self-taught painter who rose from the depths of poverty and obscurity in Edinburgh to become one of the most celebrated artists and travelers of his generation. His prints of Egypt and the Holy Land in particular would have a profound impact on European travel as well as the emerging fields of Egyptology and Biblical archaeology and would firmly establish Roberts as an important Orientalist painter. Organized by director John Olbrantz, the exhibition features prints, drawings, and watercolors of the Iberian Peninsula and the Middle East on loan from Ken and Linda Sheppard, the Yale Center for British Art, the Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum, and the Huntington Library, Museum, and Garden. A full-color, lavishly illustrated book written by Olbrantz will accompany the exhibition.
