Details: | CHARLES MINGUS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION Featuring Walter Blanding & Josh Weston Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra, Todd Stoll, Director
SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 7:30 pm John Legend Theater 700 South Limestone, Springfield
The iconic bassist, composer, band leader, and activist is the fire that pushed the second half of the first century of jazz. Honing his craft with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus is possibly the greatest and most ambitious composer of his generation. Unlike many of his predecessors, his music addressed the inequities of the 1950’s and 60’s head on; he was a fearless advocate for freedom and equality.
Joining the SSJO will be renowned tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding, formerly with Wynton Marsalis and Springfield native, vocalist Josh Weston, fresh off his national television debut in ABC’s Finding Harmony. |
