Description: |
Community Legal Aid (CLA), a non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents, seeks an experienced attorney who will serve as a Racial Justice Fellow for two years spearheading re-entry work for individuals coming out of incarceration. The Fellow will begin work in CLA's office and will use systemic advocacy and other strategies to ameliorate the adverse civil impacts of criminal records on communities of color. The Fellow will provide legal assistance to individuals who need help sealing, expunging, or correcting their criminal records; have been denied or terminated from affordable housing or public benefits programs; face custody or visitation impediments when trying to build or re-establish family relationships; or face barriers to economic stability due to the imposition of fees and fines. The Fellow will also provide know-your-rights trainings to community members and the groups and agencies assisting them in CLA's service area. The position includes some grant-reporting.
QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to Bar is required. At least five years of civil legal practice, preferably in a legal aid or similar setting, strongly preferred. Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish, preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. A demonstrated dedication to social justice, sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse backgrounds, and commitment to working with low-income communities. Access to reliable transportation required. |
